A product-first perspective

Phil Patti is the Founder of American Barbell and a driving force behind more than 45 years of strength-equipment innovation. With a product-first mindset and uncompromising standards for performance, durability, and feel, Phil has helped build American Barbell from its OEM roots into one of the most respected names in commercial strength and conditioning.

Engineering and manufacturing

Under his leadership, American Barbell has introduced many of the industry’s defining advancements, including the first hard chrome Olympic barbell, high-strength aluminum cable attachments with urethane grips, custom-molded urethane products, the splined dumbbell handle, the first urethane bumper plate, and the first Cerakote Olympic bar. His hands-on approach to engineering and manufacturing has helped set a higher standard for the equipment athletes and facilities rely on every day.

Building American Strength

Phil’s experience also extends deeply into selectorized strength equipment, including the High-Tech and LifeFitness Pro 1 lines, machines known for their durability and still found in gyms worldwide decades later. In 2026, he co-founded American Strength, expanding that experience into a new line of commercial plate-loaded and selectorized equipment.
